LR2 Submersible
LR2 is a glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) Submersible with a depth rating of
1200 feet (366m) and internal accomodation for 2 crew members. With a hull constructed
from GRP, LR2 is equipped with a significantly increased payload and therefore greater
battery capacity. Besides being a non-corroding material GRP additionally provides
superior insulation to the crew compartment from the severe temperatures encountered at
great depth. The propulsion system of the vehicle combines a single 10 hp main thruster
with four 5hp auxillary thrusters, each independently operated. This thruster capability
on a vehicle the size of LR2 together with the submersible's dual ballast system, produces
exceptional manouverability, and these features render LR2 an ideal subsea work vehicle.

Basic construction consists of two steel spheres: A crew
shere forward incorporating three viewports, which give a 180 degree field of view and a
machinery sphere aft. Two smaller spheres forward on each side of the crew sphere provide
trim using an oil system. A simular oil system, using flexible bags, situated around the
the main sphere, provides the ballast system including fine ballast for depth control.
Additional air ballast tanks are situated under the skins at either side of the
submersible.
Battery banks between the two large spheres provide propulsion power via two electric
motors, in addition to power for the electronic and ancillary equipment. |
