THE LOSS OF
THE DOURO
To the editor of the
Times.
Sir, -- The passenger of the
ill-fated steamship Douro who were picked up and taken to
Corunna by the steamship Hidalgo, signed a hurriedly drawn
testimonial which I presented to Captain Turner, before
leaving his vessel, expressing to him, his mate, Mr. Davis and
the rest of his crew, " their sincere and heartfelt
recognition of the prompt and generous services rendered to
them," and also stating that they proposed under more
favourable circumstances to offer a more substantial
testimonial of their gratitude. With
a view of carrying out this intention, several passengers have
forwarded me subscriptions, and as I am not acquainted with
the addresses of all, I should be glad if you would kindly
make it known through the columns of The Times that Messrs.
Prescott and Co., bankers, have consented to receive any
subscription which may be paid them for the " Hidalgo
testimonial," and I shall be glad to give any information
on the subject.
I am, Sir, your obedient
servant,
E.W. BONHAM, Her Majestyís Consul at
Pernambuco Mastrim-house,
Anerley, S.E., April 17.
