THE DOURO
FUND
At a meeting of subscribers
to this fund, held at Southampton last week, the Mayor (Mr.
W.H. Davis) reported that Pounds 3,657 16s. 5d. had been
contributed, which was deposited in
the banks at interest. Properly attested claims had been sent
in from six widows, eight children, one imbecile
sister, and four mothers who had been in the habit of
receiving assistance from relatives, who were
lost in the Douro. He had paid Pounds 5 to each of the widows,
and in one case of great need a further sum of Pounds 3. A
committee was appointed, including the Mayor, Captain Bevis
and Mr. J. Bowers
(general and engineering superintendents of the Royal Mail
Company), and a few other gentlemen,
for the future administration and permanent appropriation of
the fund.
